Trump Criticizes Allies, Proposes Oil Demands
Donald Trump, 79, has voiced strong disapproval of countries he feels aren’t adequately supporting his approach to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump criticized nations “like the United Kingdom,” suggesting they purchase U.S. oil to mitigate price increases.
According to Trump’s post, if these countries don’t comply, “You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S. A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us.” He further urged them to “go to the strait and just TAKE IT,” claiming Iran has been “essentially, decimated.”
Colbert's Satirical Take on Trump's Strategy
Stephen Colbert addressed Trump’s statements on The Late Show, characterizing the former president’s approach as a retreat from a self-created crisis. Colbert explained that administration officials determined a military intervention to open the Strait would exceed Trump’s stated timeline of four to six weeks.
“A Thousand-Piece Jigsaw Puzzle”
Colbert mocked Trump’s shifting stance, comparing it to abandoning a complex task. He delivered a satirical impersonation of Trump saying, “‘Ooh, this is fun. No, wait, maybe I hate jigsaw puzzles. Tell you what, I’m just gonna leave this here on the dining room table for three years. Oop. Found an edge.’”
Colbert emphasized that Trump “wants to cut and run and pass his problem off to just anybody else” with his attacks on allied nations.
Strait of Hormuz and Potential Escalation
Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supply, and is utilizing this control as leverage. The closure of the strait, which handles approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil during peacetime, has already led to a rise in U.S. retail gas prices, exceeding $4 a gallon.
Threats of Infrastructure Attacks
Colbert also highlighted Trump’s suggestion of “blowing up and completely obliterating all of electric generating plants, oils, and Kharg Island,” which he claimed had been purposefully “not yet ‘touched.’” Colbert pointed out the irony of someone mentioned over 38,000 times in the Epstein files using quotation marks around the word “touched.”
He further noted that deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure could be considered a war crime. Trump has not been accused of any wrongdoing in relation to Jeffrey Epstein, but his name appears frequently in the released files.
Trump's Disdain for NATO
Trump reiterated his long-held skepticism towards NATO, telling a British newspaper, “I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.” This statement underscores his continued criticism of international alliances.
