China Announces Ambitious Marine Research Platform
China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University has announced the construction of a groundbreaking infrastructure project: the largest semi-submersible research platform ever undertaken. Dubbed the Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility, or ‘Open-Sea Floating Island,’ the project signifies a major investment in marine science.
Design and Capabilities of the Floating Island
The platform is designed to resemble a 30-story offshore oil rig, functioning as a ‘floating island’ rather than a conventional research ship. It will feature six major research facilities, including a marine disaster laboratory and installations dedicated to studying marine meteorology and heavy ocean equipment.
Key Features and Dimensions
The facility is designed to accommodate a crew of 238 researchers. They will be able to conduct experiments at depths reaching 10,000 meters. Upon completion, the platform will boast a deck area equivalent to two football fields and a moon pool large enough to accommodate a blue whale.
Addressing Research Gaps
According to project chief engineer Xiao Longfei, the platform addresses a critical need for research facilities capable of both rapid navigation and prolonged operation in a single area. “The nation has various types of marine research facilities…However, there is a lack of research facilities that can both navigate quickly and operate for extended periods in a single mission area,” Xiao Longfei told CCTV.
Leveraging Existing Technology
The design integrates features of semi-submersible platforms and research vessels used in the marine oil and gas sector, creating a novel approach to marine research. “By integrating the characteristics of semi-submersible platforms and research vessels…a completely new concept of a semi-submersible research platform has been formed,” Xiao Longfei explained.
Project Timeline and Context
Construction of the vessel is scheduled to be completed by 2030. This project adds to China’s already substantial fleet of civilian research vessels, which has drawn scrutiny from some observers. The initiative underscores China’s growing focus on scientific advancement and its ambition to become a leading scientific superpower.
