Chicago Faces Unsettled Weather Pattern Ahead
Chicago residents should prepare for a period of highly unsettled weather conditions stretching into the upcoming weekend. This pattern is characterized by fluctuating temperatures, periods of rain, and the possibility of thunderstorm activity.
The current forecast begins with a new cluster of thunderstorms moving into the region this morning. Within this storm complex, there is a potential for downpours, lightning, and even some small hail.
Today's Storms and Temperature Divide
Forecasters do not anticipate "severe" weather during this initial storm period. However, additional showers and storms are possible later this morning, focusing primarily on areas south of the city.
Today's temperatures will highlight a familiar trend for the month: southern Chicagoland locations will warm significantly more than areas closer to the lake or in the north. Most areas will see highs in the 60s and 70s initially.
By later today, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with 40s and 50s becoming widespread across the region. The threat for severe thunderstorms later today and tonight appears concentrated well south of Chicago, particularly in northwest Indiana.
Mid-Week Cold Front and Renewed Storm Chances
Tomorrow is set to be much colder, with high temperatures struggling to reach the 40s under significant cloud cover and scattered showers. This cold air mass will be short-lived.
As the cold front retreats northward as a warm front Wednesday night into Thursday, shower and thunderstorm activity is expected to reignite. Thursday holds the potential for strong thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon hours.
Highs on Thursday are projected to be in the 60s, with southern counties potentially reaching the 70s.
Weekend Outlook: Brief Lull Before Saturday Rain
Friday may offer a brief respite from the active weather before the next wave of showers arrives on Saturday. Temperatures on Saturday are expected to remain in the 60s.
The rain associated with Saturday's system will be linked to a cold front moving through. This front will drive temperatures back down into the 40s for Easter Sunday, though the day is currently forecast to be dry.
