Florida Governor Approves Airport Renaming for Trump

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has officially signed a bill that will rename Palm Beach International Airport in honor of former President Donald J. Trump. The legislation was signed on Monday, marking a significant local tribute to the former president.

The name change is scheduled to take effect on July 1, contingent upon necessary approvals. The airport is frequently used by President Trump when traveling to his Mar-a-Lago residence located in Palm Beach, Florida.

Details of the Legislative Action

The bill, which passed both the Florida House and Senate in February, is related to measures concerning "Commercial Service Airports." The provision explicitly states that 'Palm Beach International Airport,' shall be renamed as the 'President Donald J. Trump International Airport.'

This renaming is subject to the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the fulfillment of required rights agreements. ABC News has sought comment from both the White House and the office of Governor DeSantis regarding the development.

FAA Response to the Renaming

The FAA issued a statement clarifying its role in the process. They noted that changing an airport's name is considered a local matter, and the agency does not formally approve such changes.

However, the FAA confirmed that administrative tasks are necessary. These tasks include updating navigational charts and official databases to reflect the new designation.

Trump's Reaction and Other Renaming Efforts

Following the news, Donald Trump expressed his gratitude, stating, "Proud to have played a small role in making this happen." He extended thanks to Governor DeSantis, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, and others involved.

This action aligns with other recent efforts by Trump to have public institutions named after him. These include attempts to rename the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center and the United States Institute of Peace as the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.

Furthermore, Trump has reportedly suggested renaming major transportation hubs like New York's Penn Station and Washington's Dulles Airport. ABC News previously reported that Trump offered to unfreeze billions in infrastructure funding for New York if Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer agreed to the renaming of those facilities.
