Cardinals Shortstop Involved in Single-Car Accident

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn, 24, was involved in a car crash on Interstate 64 near St. Louis on Wednesday evening, the team announced. The incident occurred hours after Winn secured a game-winning hit against the New York Mets.

Details of the Incident

According to a statement released by the Cardinals, Winn was driving alone when the single-car crash took place. He received assistance from local police officers and the Cardinals’ security and medical staff at the scene.

Winn's Condition and Treatment

Winn was transported to a hospital for evaluation. Fortunately, he did not sustain any serious injuries and was subsequently released. His availability for the Cardinals’ game against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday remains uncertain.

Game-Winning Hit Preceded the Accident

Earlier on Wednesday, Winn hit a bloop single into short right field with two outs in the 11th inning, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 victory over the Mets. This win secured the series for St. Louis, two games to three.

Previous Encounter with the Mets

Interestingly, Winn also recorded his first major league hit against the Mets on August 18, 2023. Following that game, then-Mets first baseman Pete Alonso (now with the Orioles) sent Winn a bottle of 1942 tequila and a signed bat as a gesture of goodwill after an on-field error.

“I just wanted to send him something because I didn’t want him to think about anything,” Alonso said at the time.

The Cardinals expressed gratitude that Winn was unharmed and thanked the first responders. “We are grateful that he is OK, and thank the first responders in our community who helped Masyn tonight,” the team stated.
