Sentencing is set for October 5. Caleb Flynn, a former American Idol contestant and worship leader, was found guilty Tuesday of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, and all other charges after prosecutors argued he fatally shot her and staged the scene to look like an intruder did it. The jury found Flynn, 40, guilty of all nine charges, including aggravated murder, murder, felony murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. Flynn shook his head, sobbed and wiped his nose as the guilty verdict was read, then was put in handcuffs and escorted from the courtroom. He faces a sentence of life in prison without parole, and a sentencing hearing was set for October 5. The jury deliberated for about two hours before reaching the verdict.Flynn Found Guilty of Wife MurderThe case stems from the early morning hours of February 16, when Flynn called 911 to report his wife Ashley had been fatally shot in their Tipp City, Ohio, home by an unknown intruder. Police raced to the scene and found Ashley dead in her bedroom of two gunshot wounds. Flynn told investigators he had been lying in his daughters bedroom when he heard a gunshot.He said he noticed the garage side door was flung open, and then found his wife dead in the bed. I went in their room, and I laid down with them for, I do not even know how long, and that is when I heard it, Flynn told officers in a conversation captured on police bodycam footage. When I finally got up, the door leading to the garage was open, but I did not see anybody, he said.The center console of Flynn truck, where he said he stored his handgun, was open when police arrived, according to David Hammond, a special agent with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Investigators did not find any trace of an intruder fleeing the area, and the damage to the garage side door was inconsistent with a typical break-in, police testified. The firearm has never been found.In an interview later that day, Flynn told an investigator he and his wife had no marital problems whatsoever. Prosecutors alleged Flynn murdered his wife and staged the crime scene, pointing to his affair with a fellow worship leader at his church as a motive.Affair Revealed as Key MotiveThey said Flynn wanted to frame a faceless intruder for his wife killing in order to keep his relationship with his mistress, full custody of his two daughters, his lucrative job at his wife family business and his position as a worship leader. The evidence does not lead to some unknown intruder who vanished into the night. It leads straight to the defendant, Miami County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Matt Joseph said in closing arguments.The prosecution called 40 witnesses over seven days of testimony, while the defence did not call any witnesses. During the trial, jurors visited the crime scene at the family Tipp City, Ohio, home, watched police bodycam footage from the night of Ashley death and heard Flynn messages to his 24-year-old mistress.I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail, Flynn wrote in a message to his paramour in August 2025. In a spree of texts the day before his wife death, Flynn assured Botner he was going to get a divorce the following day. Alleigha Botner, 24, testified across two days about her and Flynn nearly two-year romantic relationship.She read aloud their text messages in which Flynn described how much he hated his wife and expressed a desire to rid her from his life. I just want her dead and gone, Flynn wrote to the mistress in early 2025. When Botner learned of Ashley death the next morning, she said her heart started pounding.It seemed like too much of a coincidence that the day he is divorcing her, she is just dead all of a sudden, Botner testified. Hours after Ashley death, Flynn and Botner met at his in-laws house. Flynn appeared emotional, wiping tears and sniffling as both the prosecution and defence delivered their closing arguments, which followed nearly two weeks of testimony. Prosecutors spent about 16 minutes making their final case to jurors, while the defence took about 40 minutes.Prosecution Argues Evidence Proves GuiltAs you consider each of those charges, remember that the evidence in this case is not to be considered in isolation, Joseph said in his closing. Consider the evidence together, and when you do, the pieces connect. They corroborate one another, and they tell you what happened inside the Flynn residence on February 16, 2026. In the defence closing, attorney Patrick Mulligan said Flynn case is a murder case, and it is really nothing more.All the other charges really are dependent upon that murder charge, and I would argue that this is a case, as I discussed in voir dire, of whether or not they have missed the elements. In other words, have they proven their case beyond a reasonable doubt. Mulligan said prosecutors proved Flynn had an affair, but they did not prove he killed his wife, noting the missing murder weapon.This simply is proven versus not proven, and respectfully I would suggest this is a matter of not proven, and therefore worthy of a verdict of not guilty, he said. The defence acknowledged he had an affair but told jurors, a man can fail as a husband without being a murderer. Defence attorney Emily Smith argued the prosecution case lacked key evidence, including the murder weapon, and had little to stand on aside from his infidelity.In her opening statement, Smith said, Caleb gave them motive and his conduct made him incredibly easy to dislike, none of those things can substitute for proof of murder. In the state rebuttal, Miami County Prosecuting Attorney Paul Watkins said, The evidence never pointed to an intruder; it pointed to the defendant. The guilty verdicts represent a steep fall from grace for Flynn, who had a short stint on the show American Idol 13 years ago.Family Seeks Justice for Ashley FlynnThe thing that makes me unique, you know, I absolutely love the Lord. I love my wife more than anything, he said in an interview for the show. She is very, very pretty, just, woof, I love her. Ashley family said the verdicts brought justice and accountability for Ashley death, but acknowledged no verdict can bring Ashley back, give the girls back their Mother, or erase the pain our family has endured.The family believes, they said in a statement, that Ashley will not be defined by the way her life ended, describing her as a woman who loved Jesus with her whole heart and loved being a mother. We refuse to let the evil that ended Ashley life have the final word in her story, the statement said. Our faith does not erase our grief, but it carries us through it.We know Ashley is home with the Lord she loved and served. In a statement, Flynn defence attorney expressed deep respect for the jury system in the United States. At the same time, we are disappointed with the results, Mulligan said. Not all juries answer questions correctly.I am confident that this decision by the jury will be tested as many times as is required during the appeal process, which will undoubtedly begin after sentencing.
