Browns Prepare for Quarterback Competition
Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken addressed reporters at the NFL’s annual league meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, signaling an open competition for the starting quarterback position next season. General Manager Andrew Berry also indicated the possibility of acquiring another quarterback, specifically expressing a preference for a younger player.
Monken's Surprising Admission About Watson
Monken revealed a surprising detail regarding his preparation: he hasn’t watched much film of quarterback Deshaun Watson. He acknowledged seeing Watson play previously, including during his time with the Baltimore Ravens, but downplayed the value of certain past game footage.
Evaluating Past Performances
“Have I watched a little bit of it? Of course,” Monken stated. “But there’s also some aspects of it…Did we play the Cowboys two years ago after Cleveland opened up the season in Dallas? Yes. Is that a great film to watch Deshaun Watson on? Absolutely not.” He explained that some past games may not be representative of Watson’s current abilities.
Other Quarterback Considerations
Monken also noted that rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe is expected to visit the team. He highlighted that Michael Penix Jr. of Alabama is also a potential candidate. Monken shared that while Penix has been working out at the Browns’ facilities, Dillon Gabriel has not yet participated in offseason workouts.
Owner Haslam's Perspective
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam remains optimistic about Watson’s potential, describing him as a possible “home run.” However, Haslam also acknowledged that last year’s trade and contract for Watson didn’t meet expectations, calling it a “swing and miss.” He praised Watson’s dedication, noting his consistent presence at the team’s facilities throughout the winter. “He’s been in Cleveland most of the winter, and I think that says a lot for his dedication,” Haslam said.
Looking Ahead
The quarterback competition promises to be a key storyline for the Browns during the offseason. The team will evaluate Watson alongside potential newcomers as they strive to find the best option to lead the offense.
