Brooklyn Baby Shooting: Manhunt for Second Suspect

A manhunt is underway for a second suspect following the tragic shooting death of a 7-month-old baby in Brooklyn on Wednesday. Kaori Patterson-Moore was fatally struck by an apparent stray bullet while in her stroller.

Details of the Shooting

The shooting occurred around 1 p.m. near the corner of Moore and Humboldt streets in the Bushwick neighborhood. The baby was with her mother when gunfire erupted, prompting them to seek cover in a nearby bodega. Upon realizing her daughter was bleeding, the mother and father rushed Kaori to a hospital, where she died shortly before 2 p.m.

Suspects and Investigation

Surveillance video shows two suspects fleeing the scene on a moped. The video appears to depict the passenger firing at least two shots. The moped crashed into a car at Manhattan Avenue and Seigel Street, throwing both suspects from the vehicle.

Suspect in Custody

One suspect, believed to be the shooter, was taken into custody at the scene. He was initially held in connection with a domestic violence-related robbery case. Police are actively searching for the second suspect, who was driving the moped.

Official Statements

“This is a terrible day in our city. A tragedy that truly shocks the conscience,” said Deputy Mayor Nicole Tisch. “As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain that this family is feeling or the grief that they now carry with them. It is unspeakable.”

Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated, “There are no words that can mend the heartbreak that the family is feeling now.” He added, “My thoughts today are with the family that has suffered an unspeakable loss and appreciation for the swift and continued work of NYPD officers who not only responded to this, but have also ensured that there is an investigation that is ongoing to find every single person responsible for this.”

Possible Motive and Crime Statistics

Police believe the shooting was gang-motivated, and Kaori Patterson-Moore was an unintended target. The investigation is ongoing to determine the intended target. At least two shell casings were recovered at the scene, but no weapon has been found.

Despite this tragedy, New York City has seen a sustained period of decreasing crime. As of Sunday, the NYPD recorded 52 killings in 2026, a 29% decrease compared to the same period last year. The city is on track for its lowest number of killings and shootings in decades.
