Shooting Injures Three in Bronzeville

Three people, including an 8-year-old girl, were wounded in a shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon at a shopping center located in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago.

Details of the Incident

According to police reports, the shooting took place around 4:45 p.m. at the Lake Meadows Shopping Center, situated in the 3400 block of South King Drive. A dark-colored SUV reportedly pulled up to the victims and gunfire was discharged.

Damage to Businesses

The shooting caused significant damage to nearby businesses. Almost half a dozen windows were shattered at the Subway restaurant, and the combined Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins location also sustained damage, with visible bullet holes in the glass. The area was cordoned off for several hours as investigators worked the scene.

Victims and Their Conditions

An 8-year-old girl suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was listed in good condition. A 24-year-old man sustained injuries to his arm, chest, and groin and was taken to Stroger Hospital, also in good condition.

A 28-year-old woman was shot in the knee and received treatment at the University of Chicago Medical Center, and was reported to be in good condition.

Witness Account

One man who was inside the Dunkin’ at the time of the shooting described hearing dozens of gunshots and witnessing the three victims being struck. He sustained minor cuts from shattered glass while exiting the building.

Impact on the Community

The shooting occurred across the street from Urban Prep Charter Academy and an elementary school, raising concerns among community members. Businesses in the vicinity, including a nearby nail salon, briefly went on lockdown for approximately 15 minutes.

Community Concerns

Ruwaida Henri, who was leaving LA Fitness at the time of the incident, expressed her lack of safety. “It’s saddening to know that kids are almost never safe. I guess the bottom line: nobody is safe,” she stated.

Ongoing Investigation

As of Wednesday evening, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. Area 1 detectives are currently investigating the incident.
