A driver led San Francisco police on a chase onto the Bay Bridge Wednesday evening, resulting in a temporary closure of multiple eastbound lanes west of Treasure Island.
Bay Bridge Pursuit and Partial Closure
The incident began around 6:45 p.m. when officers attempted to stop a driver in a vehicle suspected of being connected to outstanding warrants, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
The driver refused to comply and instead led police onto the Bay Bridge. The pursuit caused Caltrans to announce a partial closure of eastbound Interstate 80 just before 7:20 p.m.
Driver Abandons Vehicle, Jumps to Lower Level
According to the United States Coast Guard, the driver abandoned the vehicle and jumped from the upper level of the bridge to the lower level.
The Coast Guard was dispatched to the area as a precaution, anticipating a potential fall into the water. The San Francisco Fire Department also responded to assist in a search.
Search and Arrest
Fire crews searched the waters but did not locate anything. The driver was eventually apprehended by police.
All eastbound lanes of the Bay Bridge were reopened around 8:30 p.m. Police stated that charges are pending as the investigation remains active.
