Two British tourists have been sentenced after a violent altercation at a cocktail bar in Mallorca escalated into a brutal assault on staff and patrons. The incident, which occurred on June 22, 2024, in Palmanova, began when a female waitress refused to serve more alcohol to Tommy Colm Witty, 24, and Alexander Lee Anderson, 33, who were visibly intoxicated.
Escalation from Verbal to Physical Violence
The situation quickly turned violent as the men responded with obscene language and aggressive gestures. The verbal abuse soon turned physical when the men pushed the waitress, causing her to fall and suffer a severe head injury and deep lacerations from broken glass on the floor.
Bystanders Targeted in Brutal Attack
The assault did not stop there. As a colleague and a customer tried to intervene, they too became victims. One man was struck in the back of the head with a piece of glass, while another patron was hit with a glass, causing injuries to his neck and hand. The scene was chaotic, with footage capturing the violent confrontation in the crowded bar.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
The Civil Guard, who were on routine patrol, arrived to find a man covered in blood wielding a broken bottle. They swiftly disarmed and detained Witty and Anderson. The victims were rushed to Son Espases Hospital in Palma, where they received urgent medical treatment for deep wounds.
Initially arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide, the charges were later reduced as part of a plea bargain. Both men pleaded guilty to three counts of wounding. Witty, who had been held on remand, was sentenced to two years in prison, while Anderson received a fine of €720.
Compensation and Court Ruling
In addition to their sentences, both men agreed to pay a four-figure compensation settlement to the victims. The court noted that the compensation was paid before the hearing, ensuring immediate financial restitution for medical expenses and lost wages.
