Braylon Mullins’s unforgettable shot in the NCAA men’s tournament East Regional final wasn’t just a moment of brilliance; it was a lifetime in the making. The shot propelled UConn to the Final Four and brought the freshman back to his roots in Greenfield, Indiana.
A Hometown Hero
Greenfield, a town of approximately 25,000, is buzzing with pride. A Connecticut Huskies license plate adorns the police cruiser of Josh Mullins, Braylon’s father and a school resource officer at Greenfield-Central High School. The electronic sign outside the school proudly proclaims, “Congrats UConn. GC is proud of you Braylon.”
Roots in Greenfield
The Mullins family’s story is deeply intertwined with Greenfield’s history. Josh and Katie Mullins met in second grade and have remained in the community ever since. Katie’s family has farmed the land outside the city for nearly 150 years, and Josh’s grandparents settled there after moving from Kentucky.
A Family Affair
Basketball has always been central to the Mullins family. Josh and Katie’s courtship began with basketball games, and their three sons – Braylon, and twins Cole and Clay – grew up with a ball in their hands. The family’s backyard court on Fifth Street became a hub for neighborhood games and intense one-on-one matchups.
Christmas Morning Tradition
A cherished family tradition involved Christmas morning shootarounds at Greenfield-Central’s Cougar Fieldhouse. For four years, Braylon would meet coach Luke Meredith at 7:15 AM for individual practice. “He shot by himself,” Meredith recalls. “He was the one constant.”
From Humble Beginnings to National Recognition
Braylon’s dedication and work ethic didn’t go unnoticed. He earned Indiana’s Mr. Basketball award in 2025, but remained grounded despite growing interest from major college programs. He received offers from Indiana, Alabama, Michigan, Tennessee, Purdue, North Carolina, Duke, UConn, Kentucky and Kansas.
UConn's Vision
Ultimately, Braylon chose UConn, drawn to coach Dan Hurley’s direct and intense approach. Hurley visited the Mullins family and promised to bring them back to Indiana for the Final Four in 2026. “Dan Hurley is exactly what you see on TV,” says Meredith. “He is unapologetically him.”
The Shot Heard 'Round Greenfield
Braylon’s game-winning shot against Duke was the culmination of years of preparation and a testament to his unwavering commitment. It was a moment generations in the making, a live-action monument to countless practice shots and a distillation of hard work. The shot echoes loudly in Greenfield, a town that proudly celebrates one of its own.
