Bethenny Frankel recently disclosed the anxiety she experiences following her diagnosis with kidney disease. The 55-year-old reality television personality detailed the constant battle with fatigue and dehydration that now defines her daily routine.
Managing Daily Life with Kidney Disease
Frankel explained that managing her condition involves a difficult cycle related to sleep and hydration. She noted, “You need the sleep because you get exhausted, and then you get dehydrated because you've slept so much.” This creates a continuous challenge of balancing rest with necessary fluid intake.
“It's a constant battling of the drinking of the water and then you're peeing, it's a lot, to be honest,” Frankel told Us Weekly while promoting Yasso’s Freezer Fraud Redemption campaign. She is actively promoting Yasso’s Frozen Greek Yogurt Spoonables.
Maternal Concerns and Health Anxiety
A significant source of Frankel's anxiety relates to her role as a mother to her daughter, Bryn, who is approaching her 16th birthday in May. She admitted that thinking about her health at her current age impacts her perspective on her daughter's future.
“I'm at a certain age, and I'm thinking about my health and thinking about my daughter. I'm having a little anxiety,” Frankel stated. She characterized the situation as manageable but acknowledged its presence, saying, “It's not the best. It's fine.”
Strict Hydration Protocols
The former Real Housewives of New York star has become extremely disciplined regarding fluid consumption. Her approach now involves maximizing every drop of water she drinks.
“I'm kind of being more non-negotiable about the hydration through water and hydration electrolyte, packets and my water has become like a smoothie,” she revealed. Her doctor emphasized the critical nature of this habit, advising her, “Water is your medicine.”
This necessity makes her feel self-conscious in public settings. “It's annoying, because it's always there. And it feels weird, like, sometimes I'm in the car and I'm taking it with me. I'm almost taking it into a restaurant. So, I feel like a weirdo,” Frankel confessed.
She struggles to balance other healthy activities with her hydration needs. “I want to exercise, but I get super dehydrated. I want to sleep, and I get super dehydrated,” she added, jokingly suggesting she could be the “international spokesperson for being the thirstiest bitch ever.”
Understanding the Diagnosis
Frankel first shared her diagnosis in January after a blood test indicated “low” kidney function, classifying it as stage 2 chronic kidney disease. She speculated on potential causes during an Instagram video.
“It could be a function of this traumatic experience I had years ago when I almost died from an allergy attack,” she explained. “It could have done damage to the kidney. It could be autoimmune.”
Stage Progression and Doctor’s Advice
In February, Frankel provided an update, clarifying that her condition had progressed to stage 3A, which signifies mild to moderate loss of kidney function, according to the National Kidney Foundation.
Her physician advised against alarm, stressing the primary treatment plan. “He said it’s the most important thing,” Frankel confirmed, noting that she does not yet require medication management, only increased water intake.
Endorsing Healthy Snack Alternatives
Frankel highlighted her attention to diet, which is why she supports Yasso products. The brand is currently running a promotion to replace disappointing, chalky frozen snacks.
From March 31 to April 30, consumers can enter at yasso.com/FoolproofFreezer for a chance to win one of 40,001 Frozen Greek Yogurt Spoonables.
Frankel praised the product’s quality and nutritional profile. “It's got protein, which people are liking. So, you're investing,” she told Us. She noted that the product is not an “empty-calorie sort of situation,” containing a reasonable 370 calories per container.
She concluded by emphasizing its appeal for both herself and her daughter. “It's real food, and it's delicious, and my daughter and I eat some every night,” she said, mentioning they also enjoy the dark chocolate crispy bars occasionally.
