Mets Adjust Lineup for Cardinals Matchup
New York Mets rookie right fielder Carson Benge will not be in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals. This decision comes as the Cardinals are starting left-handed pitcher Matthew Liberatore.
Mendoza Explains Roster Strategy
Manager Carlos Mendoza explained the reasoning behind the lineup change, stating the need to provide playing time for other members of the roster. “Early on, I’ve got to give some of the other guys a chance, as well,” Mendoza told reporters in St. Louis. “That’s how our roster is constructed. We have some guys here to face lefties, we have some guys that will mix and match. I thought today was a good opportunity for our righties.”
Lineup Changes Announced
Tyrone Taylor will start in right field, taking Benge’s place. Mark Vientos will start at first base, and Jorge Polanco, who is currently managing an Achilles injury, will return as the designated hitter. This marks the most significant lineup alteration made by Mendoza thus far this season.
Versatility and Opportunity
The Mets are prioritizing showcasing the depth and versatility of their roster. Benge has benefited from this approach during the first week of the season, receiving opportunities to play multiple positions. He shifted to center field on Monday when Luis Robert Jr. needed a day off, allowing Brett Baty to make his first career start in right field.
Vientos had limited at-bats in the first five games, with only three opportunities, while Taylor was used once as a pinch runner on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
