Bear Causes Stir in Fillmore Neighborhood

A large bear was spotted roaming through a residential neighborhood in Fillmore, California, on Wednesday afternoon. The unexpected sighting drew attention from residents and ultimately required intervention from authorities.

Initial Sightings and Community Reaction

The bear was first observed near 4th Street, prompting the City of Fillmore to issue a warning to residents to maintain a safe distance. Many community members expressed surprise at the unusual visitor. “I was surprised, a once-in-a-lifetime thing to see in your backyard,” said 12-year-old Ocean Holguin.

Resident Accounts of the Encounter

Residents described their shock at seeing a bear in their normally quiet neighborhood. “We were just shocked, you know, we’ve never seen anything like this in Fillmore, California,” one resident told FOX 11. Daniel Holguin noted the contrast with typical local wildlife: “We see possums, raccoons, not a bear, a 500-pound bear.”

Ocean Holguin recounted his experience: “My uncle called and said that there was a bear, and I didn’t believe him, so I looked out my window and I saw a big thing under the motorhome with fur and moving, and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s really a bear.’” Both Ocean and his uncle, Daniel, remained calm during the encounter.

Bear Safely Removed by Authorities

Units from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife collaborated with local law enforcement to tranquilize the bear. The operation took place on Wednesday afternoon near Edison Lane, where crowds had gathered to observe.

“A lot of support for the bear, you know, we all love animals, we’re just happy they took it away safely,” said Daniel Holguin. Residents confirmed that bear sightings are rare in the area.
