The DC Universe is populated by a vast array of dangerous villains, but Batman has identified three he deems utterly irredeemable. This distinction stems from Bruce Wayne’s deeply rooted trauma and his unwavering no-kill rule.
Batman's Unwavering Stance
Batman’s refusal to take a life, born from a tragic past, contrasts with Superman’s willingness to use deadly force when absolutely necessary. Despite their differing approaches, the two heroes frequently collaborate as the “World’s Finest,” combining Batman’s intellect with Superman’s power.
The Irredeemable Trio
During a confrontation within his dream realm, as depicted in Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #50 (written by Mark Waid, art by Dan Mora & Tamra Bonvillain), Batman articulated his belief that The Joker, Nezha, and Eclipso are beyond redemption. He argues these villains lack the capacity for change, possessing no soul or inherent goodness.
- The Joker: Batman cites the Joker’s consistent lack of empathy or remorse, exemplified by acts like the paralysis of Barbara Gordon and the murder of Jason Todd.
- Nezha: The ancient demonic sorcerer views the multiverse as a means to enslave others, driven by a sense of entitlement.
- Eclipso: As the Spirit of Wrath, Eclipso thrives on corruption and possesses no humanity to appeal to.
Beyond These Three
While Batman identifies these three as definitively irredeemable, the DC Multiverse contains numerous other villains exhibiting extreme malice. Eobard Thawne (Reverse-Flash) relentlessly torments Barry Allen, while Black Manta consistently targets Aquaman and his family with ruthless aggression.
Other villains like Ultraman, Trigon, Doctor Psycho, Doctor Light, and Darkseid represent varying degrees of evil, from inverted morality to pure, sentient darkness. Darkseid, in particular, embodies tyranny and the complete absence of empathy.
Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #50 is currently available from DC Comics.
