Four decades after the debut of “The Baby-Sitters Club,” creator Ann M. Martin reflects on the enduring appeal of her series. She initially aimed to create stories about strong, independent girls who valued friendship and support.
A Legacy of Friendship and Entrepreneurship
“When I set out to write the first book in The Baby-Sitters Club, ‘Kristy’s Great Idea,’ I wanted to create a series about girls who were strong, entrepreneurial, independent thinkers, and problem-solvers — and friends who were kind, compassionate, and supportive of one another despite their many differences,” Martin explains. She notes the heartwarming experience of families bonding over the books across generations.
From Books to Screen and Beyond
The initial “Baby-Sitters Club” book blossomed into a franchise of 250 books, selling over 200 million copies worldwide. The series has also been adapted into shows on HBO and Netflix, a feature film, and now, a new graphic novel.
First-Ever Super Special Graphic Novel
To commemorate the 40th anniversary, Scholastic will release the first graphic novel adaptation of a “Baby-Sitters Club” Super Special book. These “super special” editions are longer and feature perspectives from all members of the BSC.
“Baby-sitters on Board” Sets Sail
“The Baby-sitters Club Super Special: Baby-sitters on Board,” adapted by Raina Telgemeier and Gale Galligan, will be available on September 15th. The story follows Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, Stacey, Dawn, Mallory, and Jessi on a three-day cruise to the Bahamas, where they manage to balance adventure with their babysitting duties.
Creators Reflect on the Series’ Impact
Ann M. Martin expressed her admiration for how illustrations can breathe new life into her stories, even through subtle details like facial expressions. Telgemeier and Galligan, both New York Times bestselling authors, shared their personal connections to the series.
Raina Telgemeier, who discovered the BSC in 1986, stated, “My fondness for the girls and the world of Stoneybrook is as strong as ever. What a joy to pick up my pencil and return to illustrating Ann’s characters, and what a thrill to share this ride with Gale!”
Gale Galligan highlighted the importance of representation, saying, “From the moment I met Claudia Kishi and discovered that there were books about Asian American kids like me… ‘The Baby-sitters Club’ has opened my life up in ways I could never have imagined.”
A Reunion and a Lasting Legacy
Martin describes revisiting the world of Stoneybrook as a “reunion with close friends.” She is deeply grateful for the series’ ability to inspire a love of reading in children.
