A petition is underway to rename a street in Austin, Texas, as a tribute to Senior Police Officer Jorge Pastore. Officer Pastore was tragically killed in the line of duty in November 2023.

Growing Support for Renaming

The proposal to honor Officer Pastore is gaining significant traction, with supporters emphasizing the importance of recognizing his ultimate sacrifice and dedicated service to the city. Many believe a street renaming would be a fitting and lasting memorial.

City Council Discussions

City officials are currently engaged in preliminary discussions regarding the potential renaming. Council Member Zohaib “Zo” Qadri stated last week that the council is in the “infancy stages” of considering the proposal.

Police Association Backing

Michael Bullock, President of the Austin Police Association, expressed strong support for the initiative. He stated, “It’s a very notable event, and it’s a rare occasion, fortunately for us to lose an officer through gunfire in the line of duty, and so honoring him that way is pretty big for our department.”

Community Response

Local residents have also voiced their support for the renaming. Gabriel, an Austinite, shared, “I think that would be a better option… I feel like a lot of Austin locals are heartbroken… and I feel like anything to honor an Austin local, especially one that died in the line of duty, I feel is a better thing to look at.”

The petition specifically suggests renaming Cesar Chavez Street in Officer Pastore’s honor. Hundreds of signatures have already been collected in support of the effort.
