The Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) division recently unveiled the ROG Rapture GT-BE19000AI Wi-Fi router, a device that immediately stands out with its unconventional, futuristic aesthetic. Its $900 price tag also sparked curiosity about its capabilities.
A Router Unlike Any Other
This isn’t Asus ROG’s first foray into visually striking routers, but the GT-BE19000AI takes the design to a new level. To understand the rationale behind this ambitious product, we spoke with Juan J. Guerrero, Partnerships Manager at Asus.
Dual-Chip Architecture: Why the Power?
The router features a dual-chip, quad-core architecture with a 2.6GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a dedicated AI chip. Guerrero explained this isn’t just about raw speed, but about enhancing overall convenience and performance. This design allows for faster USB performance and improved 10G connectivity.
“Multitasking is a myth…the more you multitask, the worse your performance is,” Guerrero stated, highlighting the overhead penalty of a single-chip system struggling with networking traffic, security, and interference monitoring.
AI-Powered Features for Optimal Performance
A key feature enabled by the dedicated AI chip is WiFi Insight. This system identifies RF interference sources, like microwaves, and automatically adjusts the network band to maintain peak performance. “Normally, the user wouldn’t have data for what was affecting their network,” Guerrero explained.
Asus also incorporates “Private Edge AI,” a local AI assistant trained on internal documentation to provide troubleshooting support without sending data to the cloud. This addresses concerns about data privacy and the potential for inaccuracies found in publicly scraped AI models.
AFC: Unleashing Hidden Network Potential
Asus’ router supports AFC (Automated Frequency Coordination), a new standard approved by the FCC. AFC allows the router to utilize previously unused network bands, significantly boosting 6GHz performance. Internal tests showed a performance increase from approximately 425-450 megabits to nearly 900 megabits with AFC enabled.
Currently, Asus is the only manufacturer offering networking gear with AFC support.
Versatile Connectivity and USB WAN
The ROG Rapture GT-BE19000AI offers a comprehensive port selection, including dual 10G ports, four 2.5G LAN outlets, and multiple USB inlets. A standout feature is USB WAN, which allows users to connect a phone directly to the router and use its cellular data as a backup internet source.
“You just connect the USB cable…and we can then take your 4G or 5G cellular signal and use that as your ISP service,” Guerrero described, highlighting the plug-and-play simplicity.
Gaming and Security Features
The router includes triple-layer AI game acceleration, which prioritizes gaming devices, reduces latency by up to 34%, and avoids network congestion. It also offers AI-powered ad blocking, security assessments, parental controls, and a built-in VPN.
Guerrero summarized the overall vision: “We actually do really want it to be a Jack of all trades, but the master of all.” A full review of the ROG Rapture GT-BE19000AI’s performance and features is forthcoming.
