The Return of Max Cady
A Star-Studded Cast Takes On Classic Roles
Javier Bardem steps into one of cinema's most menacing roles as Max Cady, an ex-convict recently released from prison. The teaser offers a first look at Bardem's Cady, heavily tattooed and surrounded by news clippings in his apartment, indicating he has not moved past his violent past.
Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson also feature prominently in the series. They portray Anna and Tom Bowden, an affluent couple whose seemingly perfect lives are shattered by Cady's calculated return. Cady is determined to exact revenge for perceived wrongs committed by the Bowdens.
Premiere Date and Platform
Viewers can prepare for this chilling experience when Cape Fear makes its exclusive debut on Apple TV+ on June 5.
The Legacy of 'Cape Fear'
From Novel to Screen History
The narrative originates from John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel, The Executioners. The story centers on Max Cady, who blames witness Sam Bowden for his incarceration and seeks retribution upon his parole.
The story was first adapted into a thriller in 1962, directed by J. Lee Thompson and starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. That film was notably patterned after the works of Alfred Hitchcock and featured a memorable score by Bernard Herrmann.
The Scorsese Remake
In the 1990s, Steven Spielberg initially planned to remake the film but found the script too violent. He traded the rights to Martin Scorsese in exchange for the rights to Schindler's List.
Scorsese's 1991 version became his biggest box office success, starring Robert De Niro as an unhinged Cady, alongside Nick Nolte as Bowden and Jessica Lange as his wife. The film earned Oscar nominations for Juliette Lewis and De Niro.
Creative Team Behind the Adaptation
Showrunner and Executive Producers
This new Apple TV+ miniseries is created, written, and showrun by Nick Antosca. Both Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg serve as executive producers on the project.
The extensive cast joining Bardem and Adams includes CCH Pounder, Anna Baryshnikov, Jamie Hector, Margarita Levieva, Lily Collias, Joe Anders, Malia Pyles, Ron Perlman, Ted Levine, and Patrick Fischler. Morten Tyldum is listed among the directors for the drama series.
