Alice Springs is experiencing significant unrest after the arrest of Jefferson Lewis, 47, who is suspected of abducting and killing five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby.

Child's Death Sparks Outrage

Kumanjayi Little Baby, whose name was changed following her death in accordance with Warlpiri cultural practices, was reported missing on Anzac Day and found deceased five days later. The tragic loss has deeply affected the community, fueling the current unrest.

Vigilante Action and Arrest

Lewis was apprehended by a vigilante mob who allegedly assaulted him before police intervened. Following the arrest, Commissioner Martin Dole made the decision to airlift Lewis to Darwin due to safety concerns for all parties involved – the suspect, law enforcement, and medical personnel at Alice Springs Hospital.

Escalation into Rioting

The transfer of the suspect to Darwin ignited further anger among residents. A protest outside the hospital quickly escalated into rioting, with over 400 people participating. A police car was set on fire, and businesses, including a BP service station, were vandalized.

Police Response and Community Demands

Police responded to the unrest with tear gas and rubber bullets after being targeted with rocks. Protesters demanded Lewis be handed over for what they termed 'mob justice.' Commissioner Dole affirmed the police’s duty to protect all individuals, even those accused of crimes.

Growing Tensions and Threats

Some residents have threatened further violence if Lewis is not returned to Alice Springs, with warnings circulating on social media about a potential descent into further conflict. The incident highlights existing tensions between Indigenous communities and law enforcement.

Impact on Emergency Services

Local MP Robyn Lambley described the scene as a “site of carnage,” noting that even a woman in labor was unable to access the hospital due to the violence. Medical staff and emergency responders were also reportedly attacked during the unrest. Lewis remains in custody, and charges are expected to be filed soon.
