Alberta Independence Movement Gains Momentum
Alberta separatists believe they have met the requirements to initiate a referendum on provincial independence from Canada. The independence group Rise of Alberta announced on Tuesday that they have surpassed the necessary signature threshold.
Signature Collection and Citizen Initiative
Activists were tasked with collecting 177,000 signatures by early May to request a referendum under Alberta’s Citizen Initiative framework. Rise of Alberta stated, “This is a historic moment for Alberta and signature collection is still continuing.”
Petition Progress and Public Support
The reported success in gathering signatures represents a significant advancement for the separatist movement. However, current polling data suggests that overall public support for independence remains low.
Statements from Separatist Leaders
In a May livestream address, a separatist leader stated, “Should Ottawa, for whatever reason, continue to attack our province as they have done over the last decade, ultimately that will be for Albertans to decide.” They added, “I will accept their judgement.”
Jeffrey Rath, leader of the Alberta Prosperity Project, expressed in a February interview with Canadian Television, “the Trump administration shows Albertans far more respect than is shown to Albertans by the government in Ottawa.” He also indicated potential goodwill towards the Trump administration should Alberta achieve independence.
Financial Implications and Provincial Interests
One separatist leader commented, “I understand that there are Canadians that are upset, especially in Ontario, that when Alberta leaves, that Ontarians, for the first time in their lives, are going to have to pay their own bills…that we’ve been paying for years.”
The leader further explained, “I watched the fold time and again under Ottawa’s pressure instead of standing up for Alberta’s interests. It became clear to me that we need a new path forward—one that puts Albertans first, always.”
Next Steps and Potential Referendum Date
If the collected signatures are verified by Alberta authorities, a referendum could potentially be held in October. This would allow Albertans to vote on the question of independence from Canada.
