Details of the Collision
A recent arrest affidavit has shed new light on the car crash involving professional golfer Tiger Woods. According to the document, Woods was traveling at a high rate of speed when his vehicle collided with another car, causing his own vehicle to flip onto its side.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek confirmed the circumstances of the accident during a news conference. Because the vehicle landed on the driver's side, Woods was unable to exit through his own door and was forced to climb out through the passenger side.
Assistance from the Other Driver
The affidavit reveals that Woods did not escape the wreckage alone. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision, along with an unidentified bystander, provided critical assistance to help the golf star exit the overturned car.
The document states: "After the collision, [the other driver] stated he and an unknown subject assisted the driver out of the vehicle." Both individuals confirmed that they were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles at the time of the incident.
DUI Charges and Medication Findings
Following the crash, Woods was arrested on charges of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a blood alcohol test. Law enforcement officials reported that prescription opioids, identified as hydrocodone, were discovered in his pocket.
Prior to undergoing field sobriety tests, Woods informed officers of his extensive medical history. He noted that he had undergone seven back surgeries and over 20 operations on his leg, adding that he takes "a few" prescription medications for pain management.
A History of Legal and Health Challenges
This incident marks the second DUI arrest for the five-time Masters winner within the last decade. In 2017, he was taken into custody in Jupiter Island after being found asleep behind the wheel of a running car while under the influence of prescription drugs.
Woods has faced significant health challenges throughout his career. In 2021, he was involved in a separate wreck that resulted in serious leg injuries, forcing him to remain off the golf course for the entire year.
