World's Tallest College Player Enters Transfer Portal
The landscape of college basketball is set for a significant change next season with the departure of Olivier Rioux from the University of Florida. Standing at an unprecedented 7-foot-9, Rioux is recognized as the tallest player ever to compete at the collegiate level.
The 20-year-old center shared his decision to enter the transfer portal through an announcement on his Instagram account. In his post, Rioux expressed deep gratitude toward the coaching staff.
He specifically thanked his coaches for their belief, trust, and daily efforts to foster his development. He also extended thanks to the trainers, managers, and essential support personnel associated with the program.
Reflecting on His Time as a Gator
Rioux stated that he took time away from the court to thoughtfully reflect on his jersey and determine the best path forward for his future career. He emphasized the profound meaning of his experience in Gainesville.
"From being raised in the province of Quebec back home in Canada, to representing this incredible program, wearing these colors and competing at the highest level has been one of the greatest honors of my life…" Rioux wrote in his statement.
He highlighted the team's recent success, noting, "Winning the national championship last year was a dream come true for all of us. It’s something we worked for every single day, and to experience that moment together is something I will cherish forever."
Gratitude to Teammates and Fans
The towering player offered thanks to the alumni and "Florida Victorious" for maintaining the legacy they were proud to represent. He reserved special appreciation for his teammates.
"To my teammates, my brothers, thank you for every moment, every battle, every joke, and every memory. The bond we share is untouchable," he shared. Rioux also thanked the "Gator Nation" for their unwavering energy, passion, and support throughout his tenure.
Playing Time and Career History
During his two years with the Gators, Rioux saw limited on-court action. He redshirted during his true freshman season when the team secured the national championship.
This past season, he appeared in games primarily during mop-up duty, accumulating 15 total minutes played, seven points, six rebounds, and one assist. Rioux officially became the tallest player in college basketball history last November during a 104-64 victory over North Florida.
His first career points came shortly after, via a free throw, along with his first recorded rebound.
Comparison to NBA Giants
At 7-foot-9, Rioux surpasses the height of former NBA centers Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol by two inches. He is also three inches taller than other notable big men, including Yao Ming, Tacko Fall, and Shawn Bradley.
Head coach Todd Golden had presented Rioux with two options as a freshman: play sparingly or take a redshirt year to focus on skill development, which Rioux chose. Following the return of all four frontcourt players, Golden indicated before the season that Rioux's playing time would likely be restricted to the end of lopsided contests.
Despite this, Rioux reportedly reaffirmed his commitment to staying at Florida, welcoming the challenge of practicing against players like Alex Condon, Thomas Haugh, Rueben Chinyelu, and Micah Handlogten, while remaining behind them on the game-day rotation.
