Volkswagen’s largest American SUV, the Atlas, is receiving a complete makeover for the 2027 model year. The redesigned vehicle boasts an upscale new cabin, bolder exterior styling, and a more powerful turbocharged engine.

A Sharper Exterior Design

Revealed ahead of the New York Auto Show, the 2027 Atlas maintains a recognizable silhouette but features sharper lines and updated details. The exterior includes entirely new sheet metal, stacked headlights, a wider grille, and more sculpted body panels. Most trims will showcase an illuminated VW badge and full-width lighting at the front and rear.

New Color Options & Wheel Sizes

Volkswagen is introducing new exterior color options, including Blackberry, Sacramento Green, and Sandstone. Wheel sizes will range from 18 to 21 inches, offering buyers customization options.

Dramatic Interior Improvements

The cabin of the 2027 Atlas has been significantly upgraded. Every model will feature real wood trim, a redesigned dashboard, ambient lighting, and a column-mounted shifter to maximize center console space.

Standard & Premium Features

Even the base model includes a power liftgate, rear sunshades, dual wireless phone chargers, a 9-speaker audio system, and seven USB-C ports. Higher trims add Nappa leather, ventilated second-row seats, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, and massaging front seats.

Technology Enhancements

Technology plays a key role in the new Atlas. A standard 15-inch freestanding infotainment system (12.9-inch on the base trim) and a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster are included across the lineup. The digital gauge cluster is fully configurable to display preferred data.

Advanced Safety Features

The Atlas features enhancements to VW’s IQ.DRIVE semi-autonomous system, including lane change assist and a new driver responsiveness system that can safely pull over to the side of the road. Park distance sensors are standard, and Park Assist Plus is also included, offering automated parking and even assistance with exiting parallel parking spaces.

Updated Engine Performance

The 2027 Atlas is powered by an updated version of Volkswagen’s EA888 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, now known as the Evo5. This engine delivers 282 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful Atlas to date.

Power vs. Torque

While horsepower has increased by 13 hp, torque has decreased by 15 lb-ft compared to the outgoing model. Volkswagen anticipates improved fuel efficiency with the new engine. A hybrid version of the Atlas is still under development and expected at a later date.

“When we first launched Atlas in 2017, we delivered the space and style the SUV market was missing; practical, well‑designed, and unmistakably Volkswagen,” said Kjell Gruner, president and CEO, Volkswagen of America. “The all‑new 2027 Atlas brings more of what matters: a stronger design, smarter technology, increased power, and a premium feel where it matters most.”
