With growing concerns surrounding travel to Egypt due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Spain’s Costa Blanca is emerging as a popular and viable alternative for holidaymakers.
Shifting Travel Preferences
Egypt has traditionally been a favoured destination for British travellers, known for its Red Sea resorts, beautiful beaches, and family-friendly attractions. However, current instability has understandably caused apprehension about travelling to the country this year.
As a result, many are seeking alternative destinations, and the Costa Blanca is proving to be a compelling option. Search interest in the region has surged by 28 percent year-on-year, while searches for Egypt have decreased by 12 percent, demonstrating a significant shift in traveller preferences.
Similar Experiences, Shorter Travel Times
First Choice managing director Kevin Nelson emphasizes that the Costa Blanca delivers the same ‘extraordinary moments’ as Egypt, offering unique landscapes and natural beauty. A key advantage is the convenient two-hour flight time from the UK.
The Costa Blanca region is easily accessible via Alicante airport, with flights taking approximately two hours and forty minutes from London. Remarkably affordable flights are available, with Skyscanner listing one-way tickets for as little as £13 on May 9th.
Natural Wonders and Cultural Attractions
Unique Landscapes
The region boasts natural wonders such as Laguna Salada de Torrevieja, a stunning naturally pink lake – a rare phenomenon in Europe. This vibrant colour is due to halobacteria and Dunaliella salina, organisms that release pink pigments into the water. The lake is also a haven for flamingos, reminiscent of the pink and turquoise salt lakes of Egypt’s Siwa Oasis.
Cultural Experiences
Inland, visitors can explore Elche’s UNESCO-listed palm grove, home to over 200,000 trees, creating a distinctly North African atmosphere. Tabarca Island, a car-free island with a thriving marine reserve, offers crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life, similar to the Red Sea’s snorkelling opportunities.
Affordable Delights
Costa Blanca’s appeal extends to its culinary offerings. The region’s signature dish, ‘caldero,’ a rich fish stew cooked with fresh local ingredients and rice, is a must-try for food enthusiasts.
Dining in the area is reasonably priced, with a three-course meal for two costing around €50 (£43), and a pint of local beer available for €3 (£2.60). Accommodation options are also affordable, with hotels available from as little as £36 per night.
A Safe Alternative
Given the current UK Foreign Office advice against all travel to certain parts of Egypt and against all but essential travel to other areas, Costa Blanca presents a safe and attractive alternative. While Australia’s Coral Coast offers another option, it lacks Egypt’s historical landmarks.
