FCC Expedites Disney’s ABC License Renewal

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has accelerated the renewal process for broadcast licenses held by eight Disney-owned ABC stations. This move stems from concerns regarding the company’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices.

DEI Review, Not Kimmel Controversy, Drives Action

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr emphasized that the expedited review is not related to the recent controversy involving Jimmy Kimmel’s joke about Melania Trump. Despite calls from President Donald Trump for Kimmel’s dismissal, the FCC’s decision is based on separate concerns.

Disney’s Compliance Questioned

Carr stated the FCC’s decision was prompted by Disney’s alleged failure to provide necessary documents related to its DEI compliance. He noted, “We don’t think they were entirely forthcoming.” The licenses, originally set for renewal between 2028 and 2031, are now under expedited scrutiny.

Stations Affected and Disney’s Response

The affected stations include KFSN-TV in Fresno, KABC-TV in Los Angeles, and WABC-TV in New York. Disney has pledged to comply with the FCC’s order and affirmed its long-standing commitment to public interest broadcasting.

Kimmel Controversy and White House Reaction

The controversy began with Kimmel’s joke, which he defended as a comment on President Trump’s age. This sparked outrage from the White House, with President Trump publicly demanding Kimmel’s firing, calling him “seriously unfunny.”

FCC’s Role and Public Interest Standards

Carr reiterated that the FCC’s review is independent and focused on ensuring broadcasters meet public interest standards, including anti-discrimination measures. The accelerated review process allows for public petitions to deny license renewals.

Disney to Respond Through Legal Channels

Disney plans to demonstrate its qualifications as a licensee through legal channels, maintaining that its stations operate in full compliance with FCC rules. Kimmel has continued to mock Trump on his show despite the pressure.
