BlackRock is expanding the use of its tokenized money market fund, BUIDL, allowing eligible OKX clients to utilize it as yield-bearing collateral. Standard Chartered provides regulated custody for the underlying assets, enhancing security and trust.
Expanding RWA Tokenization
BlackRock, a leading asset management firm, is significantly broadening the functionality of BUIDL by integrating it as acceptable collateral on the OKX cryptocurrency exchange. This addresses the inefficiency of capital locked as trading collateral, which traditionally generates no returns.
BUIDL: A Yield-Generating Solution
BUIDL, designed to maintain a stable value of $1, primarily invests in U.S. Treasuries and repurchase agreements. This allows investors to earn yield while using the fund for trading purposes. This expansion is a key step in connecting traditional finance with decentralized finance (DeFi).
OKX Integration and Custody Options
OKX clients meeting specific criteria can now use BUIDL as margin collateral. Investors can choose to maintain custody of their assets with Standard Chartered, a regulated financial institution, or directly hold BUIDL tokens on OKX.
Dual Approach to Investor Preferences
This dual approach caters to diverse investor preferences and risk tolerances. OKX views this integration as a pivotal moment, moving beyond price discovery to embedding tokenization into global markets.
Initial Rollout and Standard Chartered’s Role
The initial rollout is limited to investors in the Middle East, with potential for future expansion. Standard Chartered provides regulated custody services, mirroring a successful model implemented with Franklin Templeton in April 2024.
Growth of Real World Asset (RWA) Tokenization
This development highlights the growing momentum behind the tokenization of Real World Assets (RWAs). BlackRock launched BUIDL in 2024 through Securitize, and it has become one of the largest tokenized money market funds.
RWA Market Size and IMF Concerns
The RWA tokenization market is currently estimated at around $30 billion, according to RWA.xyz. However, the IMF cautioned in April 2024 that blockchain-based financial infrastructure could accelerate market stress.
Transforming Idle Margin
BlackRock’s initiative with BUIDL and OKX represents a significant step in realizing the potential of RWA tokenization. It transforms idle margin into productive capital, paving the way for a more efficient financial ecosystem.
