The Edmonton Oilers avoided elimination with a dominant performance, defeating the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series on Tuesday night at Rogers Place.
Oilers' First-Period Surge
With their season on the line, the Oilers came out strong, building a 3-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the game. Vasily Podkolzin opened the scoring at 2:22, followed quickly by a goal from Zach Hyman.
Leon Draisaitl then added his first goal of the night, prompting the Ducks to replace starting goaltender Lukas Dostal with Ville Husso.
Key Performances
Leon Draisaitl scored twice for the Oilers, while Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each recorded two assists. Evan Bouchard contributed with three helpers.
Connor Ingram was crucial in net for Edmonton, making 29 saves to secure the victory.
Ducks Struggle to Respond
The Ducks managed to score a late power-play goal in the second period, courtesy of Alex Killorn, but couldn't close the gap.
Draisaitl capitalized on a Ducks penalty shortly after Killorn’s goal, restoring Edmonton’s three-goal advantage.
Coach and Player Reactions
Ducks head coach Joel Quenneville acknowledged the team’s slow start, stating the need for a complete 60-minute effort in Game 6. Forward Troy Terry noted the Oilers’ playoff experience and preparedness.
Despite outshooting the Oilers 24-8 in the final two periods, the Ducks were unable to mount a comeback.
Game 6 on the Horizon
The Ducks, seeking their first playoff series win since 2017, will now host Game 6 on Thursday with a chance to close out the series. The Oilers will aim to force a Game 7.
