Simone Callahan has shared the heartbreaking details of the moment she discovered that cricket icon Shane Warne had passed away. Speaking candidly on Warnes Way, a podcast hosted by her son Jackson, Callahan described the surreal horror of that night in March 2022.
The Moment Everything Changed
At the time, Callahan was in the coastal town of Somers, located an hour outside of Melbourne. She was traveling home to pick up her daughter, Summer, when a series of messages began to arrive.
"It didn't feel real," she told Jackson. "We were just having a normal Friday night." She recalled the dread she felt when receiving a message asking if she was nearly home with Summer, realizing the family needed to be together for the upcoming phone call.
Callahan noted that their lives were changed forever in that single moment, as they processed the news that Warne had died suddenly of a heart attack in Thailand at the age of 52.
The Burden on the Children
In the weeks following the tragedy, the world mourned one of Australia's most celebrated sporting figures. Meanwhile, Warne's children—Brooke, Jackson, and Summer—found themselves at the center of a chaotic storm.
Callahan admitted that much of this period remains a blur. She watched as her children were forced to organize a funeral and memorial service while struggling to manage their own intense grief.
A Mother's Guilt and Pride
Callahan expressed a deep sense of guilt that her children had to shoulder such heavy responsibilities at a young age. "I always felt a sense of guilt that you were having to deal with that," she told Jackson.
Despite the difficulty of the situation, she shared how proud she was of how they handled themselves. She observed that the pressure was "really heavy" and that they barely had a moment to truly grieve during the planning process.
Jackson Warne's Path to Healing
For Jackson, the drive to make his father proud provided the strength needed to endure the darkest days. However, he admitted that the full weight of the loss has not yet resulted in a complete emotional release.
"I felt a sense of duty that I know dad would want me to do this," Jackson stated. He noted that neither he nor his father were "big criers," and he has yet to experience a major emotional breakdown, suggesting that for some, this process can take years.
The Legacy of the 'King of Spin'
Shane Warne, widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers in history, died on March 4, 2022. He was found unconscious in a luxury villa in the resort of Koh Samui on the holiday island of Thailand.
Warne's legendary career included several remarkable achievements:
- Claimed 708 Test wickets.
- Maintained an average of 25.41.
- Played 145 matches between 1992 and 2007.
Beyond his playing days, the megastar transitioned into a successful career as a businessman and pundit before his untimely death.
