Claudio Emanuelle Vargas, a 30-year-old athlete from Puerto Rico, embodies the spirit of dedication and perseverance. His story showcases a transition from practicing acrobatics with limited resources to becoming a prominent figure in the Pro Cheer League.
The Rise of Pro Cheer League
The Pro Cheer League is a groundbreaking professional league for elite athletes over the age of 18. It provides a career path beyond traditional college or All-Star cheerleading. The league features four teams – Atlanta Air, Dallas Drive, Miami Metal, and Golden State Grit – and emphasizes high-intensity performances incorporating acrobatics, stunts, and creative routines.
A Unique Competitive Landscape
Unlike other cheerleading formats, the Pro Cheer League allows for tricks prohibited in college competitions. Vargas, who competes for the Golden State Grit wearing jersey number 23, is known for his daring double backflip. “We are making the public begin to understand,” Vargas explained, “There are different modalities within the sport.”
From Río Grande to California
Raised in Río Grande, Puerto Rico, Vargas is one of five children. His brothers, Claudio Omar Vargas and Claudio Luis Vargas, were also cheerleaders and played a vital role in his training. “My brother was always there,” Vargas shared, acknowledging the support of his older sibling.
Inspired by videos of American gymnasts, Vargas discovered his passion for cheerleading at age 15. His older brother served as his initial mentor and coach. A pivotal moment came in 2013, during his first world championship experience.
Overcoming Challenges and Seizing Opportunities
The pandemic forced Vargas to temporarily retire from the sport due to tournament cancellations. However, a chance opportunity arose while he was giving gymnastics clinics in Puerto Rico. He received a call from a gym in California needing an athlete for an important competition.
In September 2022, Vargas made a bold decision, leaving his job and home in Puerto Rico to pursue this opportunity. He relocated to San Marcos, Southern California. “It was a unique opportunity. I couldn’t let it pass,” he stated, acknowledging the financial risks but also the superior resources available in the United States.
Success and Representation
Vargas has honed his signature double backflip, a high-risk stunt celebrated in the Pro Cheer League. “A well-executed trick is more appreciated than one that is only difficult,” he emphasized, highlighting the importance of precision and artistry.
His dedication has yielded significant results. Vargas won the Cheerleading Worlds in 2023, 2024, and 2025, achievements he describes as the culmination of years of hard work. He proudly wears the number 23 to commemorate his successful 2023 season.
A Symbol for the Latin Community
Vargas views his success as representing not only himself but also Puerto Rico and the broader Latin community. Currently, the Pro Cheer League includes athletes from Puerto Rico, Colombia, Mexico, and other Latin American countries. “Saying I am from Puerto Rico is an honor, our flag is being represented among the best in this sport,” Vargas said. He also noted the significant and growing Hispanic presence within the league.
Vargas encourages aspiring athletes facing similar challenges: “You have to have the energy and determination to achieve it, even if you don't have everything.”
