Victoria Police are investigating a suspicious fire that occurred at Ellice Recycle Ltd., located near Bay and Bridge streets, on Friday morning.
Fire Reported Before 6 a.m.
The fire was reported to the Victoria Fire Department before 6:00 a.m., prompting a swift response. Smoke from the blaze led to the temporary closure of surrounding businesses. Forensic Identification Services have been dispatched to investigate the incident.
Fire Department Response & Extinguishment
According to Colleen Mycroft, spokesperson for the Victoria Fire Department, Engine 3 arrived to find a large pile of garbage ablaze at Ellice Recycling. Fire crews worked with plant operators, using heavy equipment to access and extinguish the fire. The fire was fully extinguished, and crews left the scene before 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
Business Disruption & Previous Incidents
The fire significantly impacted nearby businesses. Mike Peters, owner of Pacific Music & Art, located across from the recycling facility, was forced to close his store due to heavy smoke. A staff member was unable to work due to the strong smell, and all employees were sent home.
Peters noted this wasn’t an isolated incident, stating there have been previous fires at the Victoria Transfer Station during the 12 years his business has been nearby. He described the smoke from Friday’s fire as the most intense he’s experienced.
Police Investigation & Traffic Control
The Victoria Police Department provided traffic control, reopening the area to traffic by 9:30 a.m. The Forensic Identification Services are documenting the scene, gathering evidence, and collecting information to determine the fire’s cause.
Authorities are treating the fire as suspicious and will release further information as the investigation progresses. Affected businesses are closely monitoring the investigation’s outcome.
