San Diego Padres Set for New Ownership

The San Diego Padres are poised for a significant change in ownership as the family of the late Peter Seidler has agreed to sell control of the team to an investor group spearheaded by Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano. The transaction, valued at a Major League Baseball record $3.9 billion, is currently awaiting approval from Major League Baseball officials.

Record-Breaking Deal for the Padres

The sale, formally announced on Saturday, marks a pivotal moment for the franchise. The $3.9 billion valuation reflects the Padres’ increasing prominence and financial stability within the league. Details regarding the full composition of the investor group and the precise purchase price were not immediately disclosed.

Commitment to San Diego and a World Series

Jones and Feliciano jointly expressed their dedication to the Padres and the San Diego community. “The Padres are more than just a baseball team; they are a unifying force in San Diego, deeply rooted in community, connection, and belonging,” they stated. They aim to build upon the team’s recent successes and ultimately deliver a World Series championship to the city.

A Shared Vision and Spirit

The new owners emphasized their shared journey and the parallels between their experiences and the spirit of the Padres organization. “We have worked hard for everything we have achieved, and we have built it together. We see that same spirit in this team and its fans, and we know what it takes to win,” they added.

Transition from the Seidler Family

The Seidler family initiated the process of selling the Padres last November, two years after the passing of Peter Seidler, who assumed primary ownership in 2020. John Seidler, Peter’s brother, has served as the Padres’ chairman since then. He voiced his confidence in the incoming ownership, stating that Jones and Feliciano share the team’s vision and commitment to San Diego.

John Seidler's Confidence

“When I became control person, my goal was to continue building on our recent success in pursuit of a World Series championship for the city of San Diego and our faithful fans,” John Seidler said. “As I pass the baton to Kwanza and José, I do so with full confidence that they share that vision.”

Padres' Recent History and Success

Peter Seidler initially joined the Padres’ ownership group in 2012 following John Moores’ sale of the team for $800 million. He quickly gained favor with fans through his substantial financial support of General Manager A.J. Preller, who has led the team to playoff appearances in four of the last six seasons. The Padres consistently draw strong attendance, ranking second in MLB last season.

Looking Ahead

Currently, the Padres are performing well, holding second place in the NL West with a 19-12 record as of Saturday. Jones and Feliciano have already begun engaging with the team, attending the recent international series against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Mexico City. José E. Feliciano will become the second Latino owner in Major League Baseball, joining Arte Moreno of the Los Angeles Angels.
