The Minnesota Wild secured a decisive 5-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night in St. Paul. This win in Game 3 of their second-round NHL playoff series handed the Avalanche their first loss of the postseason.
Early Dominance by the Wild
Kirill Kaprizov led the charge for Minnesota, scoring the opening goal and recording assists on the next two. Kaprizov's goal came during a four-on-four situation late in the first period.
Less than two minutes later, Quinn Hughes extended the lead with a goal during a four-on-three advantage, putting the Avalanche on their heels early in the contest.
Goalie Changes and Second Period Action
The pressure continued into the second period when Ryan Hartman batted in a deflected power-play shot with 4:23 remaining. This goal prompted the Avalanche to make a goaltending change, replacing Scott Wedgewood with Mackenzie Blackwood.
Nathan MacKinnon managed to get the Avalanche on the scoreboard via a power play later in the second. However, the lead was quickly restored as Brock Faber deflected a puck past Blackwood just 20 seconds later.
The Wild finalized the scoring with an empty-net goal from Matt Boldy.
Strong Goaltending and Key Contributions
Jesper Wallstedt returned to the crease for Minnesota, recording 34 saves. Wallstedt's return follows a 9-6 loss in the series opener, which led to Filip Gustavsson starting Game 2.
Brock Faber contributed two assists, bringing his postseason total to nine points in nine games. Mats Zuccarello, who provided the shot for Faber's goal, also tallied two assists, raising his total to 10 points in seven playoff games.
Avalanche Records and Series Outlook
Prior to this game, the Avalanche had set an NHL record by having 12 different players score across the first two games of the series. They also faced their first multigoal deficit of the postseason in this matchup.
Scott Wedgewood, who led the NHL in goals against average and save percentage during the regular season and had six straight postseason wins, made nine saves. Mackenzie Blackwood added 12 saves.
The Avalanche maintain a 2-1 lead in the series. The teams will meet again in Minnesota for Game 4 on Monday, before heading to Colorado for Game 5 on Wednesday.
