Former Premier League star Michail Antonio has been convicted of failing to identify the driver of his Lamborghini after it was caught speeding in Birmingham.
Speeding Incident and Court Ruling
The conviction, coupled with existing points on his license, puts him at risk of a driving ban. This latest legal trouble comes less than a year after a serious crash in December 2024 where Antonio sustained significant injuries while driving a Ferrari.
Details of the Offense
The vehicle was recorded exceeding the speed limit on Birmingham’s inner ring road in March 2024. Prosecutors initially charged Antonio with driving at 50mph in a 40mph zone, but dropped the speeding charge due to his non-attendance at court.
However, he was found guilty in absentia of failing to provide information to police regarding the driver at the time. This conviction carries a mandatory six penalty points on his license.
‘Totting-Up’ Procedure and Previous Offenses
Given that Antonio already has six points, this new conviction triggers the ‘totting-up’ procedure, potentially leading to an automatic driving ban. His existing points include a previous offence for driving without insurance, stemming from the Ferrari crash.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 19th at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, where the extent of the ban will be determined. Reports also suggest Antonio is facing separate driving charges in London.
History of Driving Incidents
The near-fatal Ferrari crash in Epping Forest, Essex, saw Antonio trapped in the wreckage for 45 minutes and required over three weeks of hospital recovery from a severely broken leg.
Following the crash, Antonio publicly stated he was 'staying far away from sports cars' and expressed a newfound appreciation for life. He even switched to a Mercedes people carrier with a designated driver, his brother.
However, the Lamborghini speeding incident suggests a continuation of risky behaviour despite his public statements. The incident occurred shortly after an interview with the BBC where he detailed the emotional impact of the crash.
Antonio’s history also includes a 2019 incident where he crashed a Lamborghini Huracan into a family’s bin shed while dressed as a snowman on Christmas Day.
Antonio’s career has included playing for West Ham United, Reading, Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City, Brentford and currently Al-Sailiya in Qatar.
