Jos Verstappen, father of four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, narrowly avoided serious injury in a dramatic crash during the Rallye de Wallonie in Belgium on Sunday.
Rally Crash Details
The incident occurred when Verstappen lost control of his Skoda Fabia RS Rally2, resulting in a rollover after a collision with a tree. Despite significant damage to the vehicle – including a detached wheel and a severely damaged chassis – both Verstappen and his co-driver, Jasper Vermeulen, emerged unharmed.
Demanding Rally Route
The crash took place on a challenging route known for its fast speeds, tight corners, and straightaways, increasing the inherent danger. Organizers confirmed the severity of the accident on social media, noting the car was irreparable and Verstappen was forced to withdraw from the race.
Verstappen's Motorsport Career
Jos Verstappen is a seasoned motorsport competitor, having previously raced in Formula 1 during the mid-1990s and early 2000s. He achieved success in other disciplines, winning the LMP2 class at the 2008 Le Mans 24 Hours and currently holding the Belgian national rally championship title.
Previous Incident
This is not the first time Verstappen has been involved in a major rally crash. Last May, he experienced a similar incident at the Royal Rally of Scandinavia in Sweden, attributing it to taking a corner too quickly. He and his navigator, Renaud Jamoul, were uninjured in that event as well.
Influence in Formula 1
Beyond his rallying career, Jos Verstappen is a prominent figure in the Formula 1 world, known for his strong support of his son, Max. He was particularly vocal last season during the controversy surrounding former Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner.
Criticism of Horner
Verstappen publicly criticized Horner, expressing concerns that the team was facing internal division due to allegations of inappropriate behavior. Horner denied the allegations and later departed his role as team principal and CEO in September.
Despite the risks inherent in rallying, Verstappen continues to compete at a high level, demonstrating his passion for the sport and his competitive spirit.
