Toronto FC head coach Robin Fraser has voiced strong support for new forward Josh Sargent, highlighting his intelligence and technical skills while focusing on building his physical fitness.

Sargent's Integration and Fraser's Approach

Sargent, a 26-year-old American, joined Toronto FC in February from Norwich City, where he scored 56 goals in 157 appearances. Despite not yet scoring for TFC in two appearances, Fraser attributes this to a deliberate plan to ensure Sargent’s conditioning throughout the MLS season.

“His intelligence, his technical ability, his composure, his experience – all of those things are already evident,” Fraser stated. He anticipates Sargent will begin scoring once fully integrated and fit.

Building Offensive Output

Toronto FC aims to improve its offensive performance after managing only six goals in five games. Fraser believes Sargent’s contributions extend beyond goal-scoring, citing his defensive intelligence and experience.

Crucial Home Match Against Colorado Rapids

Toronto FC is preparing for a key home game against the Colorado Rapids at BMO Field on Saturday. The team is looking to build on recent momentum, having secured points in their last three matches.

Rapids Present a Challenge

Fraser acknowledges the challenge posed by the resurgent Rapids, who have scored 11 goals – the second-highest total in the MLS – under new head coach Matt Wells. He is familiar with the Rapids, having previously coached them from 2019 to 2023.

He specifically noted the threat of Rapids forward Rafael Navarro, who has already scored three goals. The match will also see the return of defender Kosi Thompson, recently traded from Toronto FC to the Rapids.

Looking Ahead to the Home Stretch

With seven consecutive regular-season games scheduled at home, Fraser views this as a critical opportunity for Toronto FC to climb the standings. Goalkeeper Luka Gavran expressed the team’s belief in their potential and determination to build on recent results.

Toronto FC is aiming to return to the MLS playoffs after failing to qualify since 2020. Matheus Pereira, a first-year left-back, will also be available after recovering from a groin injury.
