A SpaceX rocket upper stage is on a trajectory that will end in a violent collision with the moon, according to independent space tracking experts... The debris, which was used to launch a pair of lunar landrs roughly one year ago, was left in a chaotic orbit following its primary mission. Over time, gravitational perturbations have gradually nudged the defunct stage onto its current collision course.
This unintentional impact follows a pattern of orbital debris interacting with the lunar surface, such as the 2022 incident involving a Chinese rocket segment. As Bill Gray, a space tracker, noted, the increasing volume of defunct satellites and rockets is making space increasingly crowded. Gray, who plans to observe the aftermath from New Brunswick, Canada, emphasized that this was never an intentional maneuver by SpaceX.
The 90-foot crater near Einstein Crater
The impact near the Einstein Crater is projected to release energy equivalent to three tons of TNT. This high-speed collision is expected to carve a crater approximately 90 feet wide and 16 feet deep into the lunar regolith. Because the impact site is located on the moon's sunlit western limb, the lighting conditions should be favorable for astronomical observation.
A massive plume of dust and rubble is also expected to be ejected during the strike.. This debris cloud could stretch for miles into space and remain visible to specialized telescopes for several tens of minutes following the initial impact.
Danuri and NASA orbiters to capture the debris plume
South Korea's Danuri spacecraft will provide a rare close-up view by flying within two miles of the SpaceX stage just minutes before the crash. This proximity offers an unprecedented opportunity to witness the collision sequence in high detail. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will also be positioned to capture before-and-after imagery of the site to map the new crater.
Scientists from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, including Benjamin Fernando, intend to use the event to study how dust behaves on airless bodies .. Benjamin Fernando explained that because the moon lacks an atmosphere and has low gravity, the ejected material will behave differently than it would on Earth. The data gathered will be vital for understanding the risks that high-speed debris poses to future astronauts and lunar equipment.
Will the sub-second flash be visible from Earth?
Several variables regarding the visibility of the event remain unverified. While orbiters will have a front-row seat, the impact flash itself may last less than a second and will likely be invisible to the naked eye from Earth. It remains unclear if ground-based telescopes will be able to capture the tiny flash or if the resulting debris plume will pose a significant long-term hazard to future crewed lunar missions.
