Science North has launched a groundbreaking interactive exhibit featuring three new Gravity Chairs on its fourth floor. These innovative chairs allow visitors to physically experience the varying gravitational forces of Earth, Mars, and the Moon.
Experiencing Planetary Gravity
The Gravity Chairs utilize a rope and pulley system, enabling participants to lift themselves while seated, simulating the reduced weight experienced on other planets. Each chair is calibrated to represent a different gravitational environment. A built-in motor ensures a smooth and safe descent, making the experience accessible for all ages.
A Collaborative Project
The Gravity Chairs were meticulously designed, tested, and fabricated by students and staff at Cambrian R&D, the applied research division of Cambrian College. This partnership provided Cambrian students with a valuable opportunity to apply their engineering skills and showcase their work.
Statements from Leadership
Ashley Larose, CEO of Science North, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “This project is a great example of what can happen when education, innovation, and community partnerships come together. The Gravity Chairs give visitors a fun, physical way to understand planetary gravity while showcasing the incredible talent and creativity found right here in Northern Ontario.”
Kristine Morrissey, president of Cambrian College, added, “This project was such a great way to expand the scope of the applied research partnerships and initiatives we do at Cambrian R&D. What a terrific experience for our students and staff who worked on this, who can feel that sense of pride every time a visitor to Science North tries one of these chairs.”
Connecting to Artemis II
The exhibit also connects to the recent Artemis II mission, which saw Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen become the first Canadian to orbit the Moon. While Artemis II did not land on the lunar surface, it tested the Orion spacecraft and advanced human exploration of deep space.
A Taste of Space Exploration
Visitors can now experience a small taste of that journey with the new Gravity Chairs, discovering how different the universe feels beyond Earth. The exhibit is included with general admission to Science North and is located in Space Place on the fourth floor.
