A recent Roy Morgan poll indicates that the majority of Australians remain unconvinced by Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, following their high-profile visit to the country. Public criticism has mounted regarding the perceived commercialization of their royal status.

Tour Fails to Sway Public Opinion

The comprehensive national survey, conducted by Roy Morgan, revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit did not significantly improve public sentiment. Their itinerary included appearances at luxury wellness retreats, a visit to the Australian War Memorial, and a cameo on MasterChef Australia.

Key Findings from the Roy Morgan Poll

The data, gathered from 1,767 Australians aged 18 and over, showed high awareness of the visit – approximately 18.1 million Australians were aware of their presence. However, this awareness didn’t translate into a positive shift in opinion.

Public Perception Remains Negative

  • Only 19 per cent of respondents reported an improved opinion of the couple after the tour.
  • A significant 81 per cent stated the tour had no positive impact on their perception.
  • 87 per cent believe the visit will not mend the relationship between Prince Harry and King Charles III.
  • 59 per cent oppose the couple permanently relocating to Australia, while 41 per cent support it.
  • Divisions Over Treatment and Legacy

The survey also explored perceptions of how Harry and Meghan have been treated by the Royal Family. 31 per cent feel they have been unfairly treated, while nearly 70 per cent disagree.

    Queen Elizabeth II's Potential View

The population is almost evenly split on whether the late Queen Elizabeth II would have approved of the visit, with 51 per cent believing she would have disapproved.

    Commercialization Concerns

Controversy surrounded Meghan Markle’s commercial activities during the tour. Following a meeting with survivors of a tragedy in Bondi, critics noted her entire outfit was available for purchase on a fashion website in which she has an investment.

    Impact on Royal Reputation

The Duchess earns commissions of 10 to 25 per cent on sales generated by her wardrobe choices. Royal commentators, like Richard Palmer, suggest this aggressive commercialization could lead the monarchy to distance itself from the couple, potentially considering stripping them of their titles.
