Quebec Solidaire Targets Housing Crisis with Rent Control Plan
Québec solidaire, a leftist party in Quebec advocating for sovereignty, has put forward a proposal for rent controls as a key solution to the province’s growing housing affordability challenges. The party aims to reduce rental costs and improve housing security for residents.
Party Convention Focuses on Affordability
The proposals were unveiled at the conclusion of Québec solidaire’s convention on Sunday. The party, which currently holds 11 of the 125 seats in the National Assembly, pledged to limit annual rent increases to match the rate of inflation.
Debate Over Rental Market Regulation
Members of the party formally adopted the position following discussions regarding the extent of regulation needed in the rental market. Some smaller landlords voiced concerns that a rent cap could hinder their ability to increase rents and maintain their properties.
The party’s focus on affordable housing is connected to wider concerns about inequality and ensuring access to secure housing for all Quebecers. Should Québec solidaire form a government, the proposed rent control policy would be implemented.
