OTTAWA – Conservative MP Marilyn Gladue has crossed the floor to join the Liberal party, a move announced during a live broadcast on CBC News. The decision, according to Government House Leader Stephen McKinnon, was made after Gladue considered the priorities for the country and the functioning of her party.

McKinnon stated that Gladue wants to be “part of solutions” and a “positive vision for building Canada,” adding that voters in Conservative ridings are asking their MPs to do the same. When questioned about Gladue’s previous stance on by-elections for party switchers, McKinnon noted that people “evolve” and that her decision to join the Liberal team indicates adherence to Liberal values.

During the broadcast, McKinnon highlighted the opening of a major port project as an example of the Liberal party’s positive vision. He also addressed concerns about Gladue’s past statements, stating that her actions demonstrate a commitment to Liberal principles.

Rising Food Costs

CBC News also reported on the ongoing increase in food prices across Canada, linked to rising fuel costs. The broadcast highlighted that fuel surcharges from shippers and suppliers are being passed on to consumers. While specific examples were mentioned in previous reporting (a two-pound bag of onions rising from 75 cents to $1.00 in Nova Scotia), the live broadcast focused primarily on the political developments.

Public Sector Accommodation Requests

The CBC News broadcast also included a report on challenges faced by public servants seeking workplace accommodations. According to the report, some employees with medical conditions, including anxiety and bladder issues, are only having their requests for work-from-home arrangements approved after experiencing crises in the workplace. The number of accommodation requests at Employment and Social Development Canada jumped from 50 in 2021 to over 7,200 last year. The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat stated that accommodation needs continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Northern Fire Preparedness

Finally, the broadcast featured a report on preparations for wildfire season in northern Manitoba. Communities like Flin Flon, Snow Lake, and Lynn Lake are taking preventative measures after last year’s widespread fires, including purchasing equipment and building fire guards. Natural Resources Minister Ian Bushy stated that more firefighters and equipment will be deployed to the north this year.
