HALIFAX – A CBC News broadcast on Friday detailed a significant political shift in Canada and continued uncertainty regarding a ceasefire agreement involving Iran.

MP Gladue Crosses the Floor

Marilyn Gladue, formerly a Conservative Member of Parliament representing a riding in southwestern Ontario, has joined the Liberal party. The move, announced on Wednesday, has sparked debate among constituents, according to CBC News. Gladue represented the region and Parliament for over a decade, winning her last election with more than 40,000 votes.

According to CBC News Chief Political Correspondent Rosemary Barton, Gladue’s decision was a “moral choice” to align with a party focused on Canada. Some former political challengers expressed shock at the announcement. Conservative MP Tony Vandenberg stated he had concerns about Gladue’s track record but intends to discuss her reasons for the switch. He and another MP, Kyle Kilner, noted the move gives the border region representation at the government table.

Gladue stated she was drawn to the Prime Minister’s plans to build more homes, diversify trade, and reduce crime, citing these as priorities for her constituents.

Kimberly Brissett, chief of the Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation in Gladue’s riding, indicated the Liberal Party generally offers more support to First Nations, but acknowledged Gladue had previously been supportive of their community’s needs.

Acadia University professor Alex Marland, co-author of No Eye in Team, Party Loyalty in Canadian Politics, explained on the broadcast that Gladue’s move, while allowed, is unusual given the ideological distance between the two parties. Marland suggested the switch could be the result of backroom negotiations or Gladue’s frustration with the Conservative leadership. He also noted that MPs who switch parties often lose friends and face disappointment from their constituents. Marland cautioned against the idea of forcing by-elections for MPs who cross the floor, arguing it would empower party leaders.

Marland proposed a 30-day pause period where an MP would sit as an independent and consult with constituents before officially changing parties. He also suggested allowing MPs to sit as independents without triggering a by-election if they simply wish to leave their party.
