The Michigan Democratic Party has nominated Amir Makled to the Board of Regents following his victory over incumbent Jordan Acker, despite facing criticism for past social media activity.
Regent Acker Denied Nomination
A significant decision at the Michigan Democratic Party convention this past weekend resulted in incumbent Board of Regents member Jordan Acker being denied the party nomination for his seat. He was surpassed by Amir Makled, a trial lawyer.
Controversial Social Media Posts
Makled’s nomination has drawn intense scrutiny due to his recent social media history. Reports confirmed that Makled amplified content on X, praising Hezbollah figures Hassan Nasrallah and Abu Ali Khalil as martyrs following their deaths in Israeli airstrikes. These posts have since been deleted.
Criticism from Party Leaders
Brandon Dillon, a former chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party, published an opinion piece in the Detroit News prior to the convention. He characterized Makled’s public statements as demonstrating extremism and bigotry, arguing he is unfit for public office.
Concerns Over Rhetoric and University Climate
Makled has also faced criticism for sharing content from controversial figures allegedly utilizing dehumanizing rhetoric against Israelis. This nomination occurs amid heightened tensions on university campuses regarding the Middle East conflict.
Support for Pro-Palestinian Activism
In his acceptance speech, Makled praised student activists who engaged in anti-Israel protests at the University of Michigan. He reaffirmed his support for the divestment movement, calling for the university to cut financial ties with Israel.
Federal Investigation and Campus Incidents
The University of Michigan is currently under federal investigation by the Department of Education for potential violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This investigation relates to alleged failures to combat antisemitic harassment and discrimination on campus.
The situation is further complicated by past incidents, including the vandalization of Regent Acker’s vehicle with slogans and symbols associated with Hamas.
