British-Nigerian lawyer Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu is at the center of a public outcry after criticizing the Metropolitan Police’s response to a terrorist attack in Golders Green. The incident has sparked a national debate regarding police conduct and political reactions to acts of terrorism.

Golders Green Attack and Police Response

On Wednesday, Metropolitan Police officers subdued Essa Suleiman, a 45-year-old Somali-born man, using a Taser. Video footage shows officers also kicking Suleiman in the head and body to disarm him during a violent assault. Suleiman attacked two Orthodox Jewish men, Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76, leaving them severely injured and hospitalized.

Criticism of Police Actions

Dr. Mos-Shogbamimu condemned the officers’ actions as an excessive use of force, questioning the necessity of repeatedly kicking Suleiman after he was incapacitated by the Taser. She argued in a series of tweets that Suleiman should have been brought to justice alive, labeling the police actions a “contemptible abuse of power.”

Political Fallout and Condemnation

Green Party leader Zack Polanski faced significant backlash for retweeting a post echoing similar criticism of the police, suggesting they were too forceful with a man experiencing mental health issues. Critics accused Polanski of prioritizing the suspect’s well-being over the victims.

The Green Party subsequently released a statement condemning the anti-Semitic violence and expressing solidarity with the Jewish community. However, the damage to Polanski’s reputation had already occurred. Conservative MP Neil O’Brien and Labour’s Jonathan Hinder were among those who criticized Polanski’s actions.

Suleiman’s Background and Previous History

Suleiman has a history of serious violence and mental health issues. He was previously referred to the government’s counter-terrorism Prevent program in 2020. Home Office minister Mike Tapp described the Green Party’s stance as “disgraceful,” while Labour MP David Taylor stated he felt proud of the officers’ actions after viewing the incident footage.

Dr. Mos-Shogbamimu has a history of making controversial statements, including past criticism of the Royal Family and praise for Meghan Markle’s decision to not attend King Charles’ coronation. Her recent comments have further polarized public opinion.
