HALIFAX – CBC News’s evening broadcast on Monday covered developments in Nova Scotia regarding cannabis regulations and provided an update on the Artemis II mission.

Cannabis Dispute Intensifies in Nova Scotia

Tensions are rising between the Nova Scotia government and Mi'kmaq communities over the sale of unregulated cannabis. Protests have occurred, including a highway blockade, and police conducted a raid on a cannabis shop on the Bodladek First Nation in Cape Breton, resulting in two arrests. One individual stated they were exercising their treaty rights.

According to the broadcast, the RCMP found their vehicles vandalized with broken windows, damaged tires, and urine. The Bodladek band council stated they do not condone the actions. In December, Nova Scotia’s justice minister directed police to enforce a crackdown on illegal dispensaries, and the provincial government subsequently passed legislation with tougher penalties.

Artemis II Crew Member Connects with Family

The CBC News broadcast also featured an interview with Dr. Catherine Hansen, wife of Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, who is currently participating in the Artemis II mission. Dr. Hansen described a recent private family conference with her husband, during which he expressed his excitement about being in space and experiencing zero gravity.

During a flyby on the dark side of the moon, the crew sent a message to their families. The crew also honored Carol Weissman, the wife of a friend who passed away from cancer, by naming a crater after her. Dr. Hansen noted the crew’s strong bond and support for one another. She also highlighted her husband’s enthusiasm for the scientific aspects of the mission, stating he was more excited about the 3D components of the moon than she anticipated.

Dr. Hansen said that the crew’s gesture of naming the crater after Carol Weissman was a deeply emotional moment for everyone involved.
