HALIFAX – CBC News’s evening broadcast on Monday covered developments in Nova Scotia regarding cannabis regulations and provided an update on the Artemis II mission.
Cannabis Sales Lead to Protests and Arrests
Tensions remain high between the Nova Scotia government and Mi'kmaq communities concerning the sale of unregulated cannabis. According to the broadcast, protests have occurred, including a highway blockade, and police raided a cannabis shop on the Bodladek First Nation in Cape Breton, resulting in two arrests.
Artemis II Crew Communicates from Space
The CBC broadcast featured an interview with Dr. Catherine Hansen, wife of Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, who is currently participating in the Artemis II mission. Dr. Hansen described a recent private family video call with her husband, during which he expressed his enjoyment of zero gravity and the experience of being in space. She anticipates he will have many stories to share upon his return.
During the mission, the crew communicated with Earth while on the far side of the moon, with Hansen sending a message to his family. Dr. Hansen described the moment as deeply emotional, noting that many viewers were also moved by the exchange. She stated that the crew members have a close bond and support each other throughout the mission.
Dr. Hansen also highlighted the crew’s tribute to Carol Weissman, the wife of a friend who passed away from cancer, by naming a crater on the moon in her honour. She noted the emotional impact of this gesture, both for her family and for viewers worldwide.
According to Dr. Hansen, her husband is sleeping well and enjoying the experience immensely. She acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the crew’s return to Earth and the splashdown process, stating she expects a tightly held moment of anticipation.
