Residents and visitors of Oshawa will have the opportunity to explore over 20 unique buildings and spaces during the annual Doors Open event on May 2nd. This free, community-driven initiative provides a glimpse into the city’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Exploring Oshawa’s Landmarks
Highlights of this year’s event include the Oshawa Executive Airport, Oshawa City Hall, and the Oshawa Little Theatre. These locations offer insights into Oshawa’s past, present, and future ambitions.
Oshawa Executive Airport: From Training Base to Modern Hub
The Oshawa Executive Airport, originally constructed as a World War Two training base, has evolved into one of Canada’s top twenty busiest airports. Airport Manager Stephen Wilcox shared this historical context.
During Doors Open, the Canadian Forces will be present with a Chinook helicopter, and paratroopers from the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada will also be on site.
Oshawa City Hall & Second Marsh Conservation
Oshawa City Hall will host an exhibit by Friends of Second Marsh, a charity dedicated to preserving the 400-hectare wetland and its over 100 bird species. Peter Taylor, president of Friends of Second Marsh, hopes the exhibit will educate attendees and encourage further exploration.
Bird watching hikes will also be offered, and a booth will be set up at the Darlington Trail to provide more information about the marsh.
A Peek Behind the Curtain at Oshawa Little Theatre
The Oshawa Little Theatre will open its doors to the public, offering a sneak peek at a rehearsal in progress. Visitors may also see costumes from previous productions.
Director of Marketing Erin Mikaluk emphasized the dedication of the theatre’s volunteers and its role as a hub for youth talent and creativity.
Oshawa’s Defence Sector Ambitions
The City of Oshawa is also using the Doors Open event to showcase its ambitions in the defence sector. The city aims to become a leader in Canada’s defence industry through innovation and collaboration.
Mayor Dan Carter expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating it’s an excellent opportunity for residents to connect with their community and learn about Oshawa’s heritage and identity.
