A joyous Lao New Year parade in rural Louisiana turned tragic on Saturday when a vehicle struck attendees, resulting in multiple injuries and a swift response from law enforcement and emergency services. The incident occurred during the annual festivities held in Broussard and New Iberia, popular destinations for the Lao community.

Initial reports and social media videos showed scenes of distress, with numerous individuals injured. First responders worked quickly to assist those affected, including firefighters extricating a person trapped under the vehicle after it left the parade route and entered a ditch.

Emergency personnel, including Acadian Ambulance, rapidly arrived at the scene to provide medical care and transport the injured to local hospitals. Approximately 15 people sustained injuries, some serious. Acadian Ambulance deployed 10 ambulances and a helicopter, and two patients were airlifted for further treatment.

Driver Arrested and Charges Filed

Law enforcement officers arrested the driver, identified as a 57-year-old resident of Jeanerette. Police observed signs of impairment, and subsequent testing confirmed a high blood alcohol level.
