A major fire broke out in the 1000 block of North Main Street in Los Angeles Chinatown on Thursday evening. The flames moved from an outdoor area into several commercial buildings, forcing the Los Angeles Fire Department to adopt defensive maneuvers.
The 7 p.m. blaze on North Main Street
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to reports of a structure fire in the 1000 block of North Main Street just before 7 p.m. on Thursday. the fire, which began as a large outdoor blaze, quickly moved into several commercial structures in the heart of Los Angeles Chinatown.
According to LAFD Captain and Public Information Officer Branden Silverman, the situation was critical upon arrival. A one-story commercial building was already being consumed by flames, with heavy fire tearing through its roof.. Additionally, the eastern portion of a two-story building was caught in the blaze, though a central division wall prevented the fire from spreading to the western half of that structure.
High-voltage wires force defensive operations
Firefighters were forced to abandon an aggressive interior attack in favor of defensive operations due to extreme environmental hazards.. The presence of high-voltage electrical wires near the burnng buildings created a life-threatening situation for crews attempting to extinguish hotspots.
To manage the risk, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) shut off power to the surrounding area, which included disabling local streetlights. As reported by the LAFD, these energized wires significantly hindered the ability of crews to use ladder trucks and ground equipment effectively, forcing them to rely on large-volume appliances to pour water from a distance to protect neighboring properties.
Smoke plumes and shelter-in-place orders for nearby apartments
The intensity of the fire sent a massive plume of smoke over downtown Los Angeles, impacting the air quality for residents in the immediate vicinity. Local resident Naara Fischert described the visual intensity of the fire, stating it was "red, red, red" and accompanied by intense heat. Another resident, John Lee, reported that smoke had completely filled his room.
While the LAFD successfully shielded a nearby apartment complex from direct flame contact, the threat of smoke inhalation remained high. Firefighters instructed residents within the complex to shelter in place, keeping all doors and windows tightly closed while crews monitored the conditions to ensure no emergency evacuations were required.
What businesses were lost on North Main Street?
The full extent of the economic damage in the 1000 block of North Main Street remains unknown. Captain Silverman noted that officials are still working to determine the exact nature of the occupancies within the damaged buildings and what specific businesses were operating there.
The official cause of the fire is currently under investigation by arson investigators. Although the LAFD has requested heavy equipment to assist with overhaul operations, the specific origin of the blaze has not yet been identified.
